Barrier lotion keeps dirt under control
You can usually tell gardeners by the dirt under their nails. Not anymore, though. YardGlove Products of Cincinnati has developed a lotion designed to keep gardeners' hands cleaner. The product, YardGlove Barrier Lotion, is applied to hands and arms before gardening to keep dirt from penetrating the skin and to make washing up easier. Its ingredients include (oat flakes) and beeswax, so it protects and moisturizes skin without feeling greasy or sticky.

The protection lasts several hours, or until the lotion is washed off with soap and water. Water alone won't remove it under normal conditions, so you can water your plants or work in wet soil without losing the lotion's protection.

YardGlove is available at some garden centers and online. The suggested retail price is about $9.

Keeping hands clean, unchapped, with no skin rips is a major chore. Most stiff hand and nail brushes will grind out soil, but they are surely hard on the hands. A new product, YardGlove, is on the market, and I find it very effective. Applying the lotion before you go into the garden puts a protective barrier on the skin to protect against the penetration of fertilizer, soil, mulch and other garden soil and chemicals. Water alone does not remove the protective barrier. But wash with soap and water, and all the garden grime slides off and still leaves your hands moist. Jolly Lane Greenhouse sells this, and the product's Web site is www.yardglove.com.

Lotion glove: Just because you have a green thumb doesn't mean you deserve dirt-stained fingernails spring through fall. Cincinnati's YardGlove Products has whipped up 4-ounce tubes of YardGlove, a non-greasy natural mixture barrier lotion (no silicone or petroleum) with a light cucumber scent. We tried just a dollop on hands (with and without gloves), feet and knees and came away clean after a day of digging and soap-and-water wash-up. About 100 applications per tube. $8.95 at Benkens, Bloomin' Garden, Burger's, Curious Garden, Delhi, Hader Hardware, Mariemont Garden Center, Meyer Hardware, Moeller Nursery, Nann's Florist, Natorp's and White Oak or Web site.

Like most gardeners and home tinkerers, I love to try out new stuff. Tools. Gadgets. Products designed to do things easier or differently or with more style.  I'm the consumer the marketing people dream about.  But I'm not a pushover. For something to gain access to my toolbox or be put to work in my garden, it has to pass a few tests.  Maybe it's a clever tweak of an old idea. Perhaps it's a wholesale rethinking of a toolbox staple. Exceptionally well-made products always turn my head. Oh, and I'll admit it -- sometimes it's just cute, cool or in an eye-popping shade that makes me smile.  Here's a look at a dozen things that pass with flying colors.

YardGlove ProductsYardGlove Barrier Lotion

What it is: A lotion you apply before you garden that forms a protective, moisturizing barrier on your hands.

Why it's cool: This is a wonderful product for gardeners who don't always remember to put on gloves or who want to become one with the soil without their hands showing the dark side of gardening -- stains, dry skin, raggedy cuticles and all the rest. Beeswax in the non-greasy lotion forms a barrier on the skin surface; dirt, mulch, fertilizers and other potential irritants sit on the barrier and wash off with soap and water (water alone won't wash it off, so you can use the hose without losing your protection). (Oat Flakes) in the lotion gives your hands a little conditioning treatment.

How much: $8.95 for a 4-ounce bottle (about 100 dime-size applications).

Who makes it: YardGlove Products of Cincinnati, Ohio.

How to get it: (513) 271-8228, or www.yardglove.com

A 4-ounce container holds more than 100 applications and sells for about $10 at local nurseries. More information at www.yardglove.com

Clean and Dry

October 11, 2003
--
There are those of us who hate to wear gloves when gardening. We like to feel the dirt, touch the plants and later spend hours scraping out dirt from under our fingernails. But thanks to YardGlove, our manicure (and the rest of our hands) stay nice and clean.

YardGlove is a greaseless, nontoxic barrier lotion that protects hands and makes cleanup much easier, especially around the nails and cuticles. Apply a little to hands and especially under the fingernails. It absorbs fairly quickly and leaves hands feeling a bit like you've powdered them. YardGlove helps prevent dirt from sticking and staining, and it leaves hands feeling moisturized.

Retailers in Texas don't carry it, but you can order YardGlove online at www.yardglove.com. A 4-ounce bottle sells for $8.95 plus shipping and handling, and contains about 100 applications.
